‘Vampire Diaries’ Creators Spill on Season Two (via PopWrap)
PopWrap talked to Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson about Season 2 of The Vampire Diaries, and they’ve generously shared the awesome interview with us! Check out a few key points below; you can read the full (slightly lengthy) article at the source. There are minor spoilers in the interview, though it’s nothing that most of us don’t already know after seeing the recent promos!
PopWrap: Congrats on an amazing season premiere — I have to know where the idea to make Caroline a vampire came from.
Kevin Williamson: We started talking about it last year
Julie Plec: Honestly, that was Kevin’s idea – he said it right at the end of the season when we were done with the scripts and were so exhausted that we didn’t even want to think about season two yet. We actually made a pact not to talk about season two until we had a break, but then he goes, “you know, I really think Caroline needs to be a vampire.” It was one of those random thoughts, but he was so right.PW: What made you realize that Kevin?
Kevin: One of the things Julie and I both struggled with last year were the supporting characters. Everyone seemed to zero in on the love triangle and anyone involved with the supernatural world had a lot of story. We struggled to incorporate any human in the dark into the story. We want human’s in the show, but we needed an element that would involve the other supporting characters.PW: The last time you made one of the main characters a vampire — vicky — she didn’t last very long. Will Caroline have a longer shelf life?
Kevin: I think it’s safe to say yes.
Julie: Here’s the deal, Caroline could die in any episode – she is doomed. She is absolutely, fundamentally doomed by definition of her own personality and her lot in life. Her mom’s in the council and is the sheriff. She’s also a neurotic, jealous busybody who is always putting her foot in her mouth and Damon isn’t going to put up with her – so she’s doomed. The question is, how much fun can we have getting her out of those doomed situations and for how long. Because we really, really believe that this character has a long shelf life.PW: I can’t wait to see Candice Accola as a vampire!
Julie: She’s amazing. We have a lot of fun. The sad part is, now that she’s a vampire, it doesn’t bode well for other people’s shelf lives. Now we have one more vampire around to kill people.
